KMA Confirms Review of Detained Kenyan Vessel in Tanzania

The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has issued a statement addressing reports about the detention of a Kenyan-flagged vessel in Tanzania, confirming that the matter is under active review. In the press release, the Authority acknowledges the incident involving the vessel, identified as M/V SEA MFALME, in the United Republic of Tanzania, while outlining steps being taken to verify the circumstances.

“The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) acknowledges reports regarding the detention of a Kenyan-flagged vessel, M/V SEA MFALME, in the United Republic of Tanzania,” the Authority stated.

KMA noted that it is working closely with relevant government agencies and counterparts in both Kenya and Tanzania to establish the facts and guide appropriate follow-up actions.

“The matter is currently under review, with the Authority working closely with relevant Government agencies and counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania to verify the circumstances and facilitate appropriate follow-up actions,” KMA added.

The Authority further moved to reassure stakeholders that the situation is being handled within existing regulatory and intergovernmental frameworks.

“KMA wishes to assure stakeholders that the situation is being handled through established intergovernmental and regulatory frameworks,” the statement explained, adding that further updates will be provided when necessary.

At the same time, KMA emphasized its continued commitment to maintaining standards within the maritime sector. “The Authority remains committed to safeguarding the credibility of Kenya’s ship registry and ensuring adherence to applicable maritime standards,” it affirmed.

The statement also reiterated KMA’s broader mandate, noting that the Authority is responsible for regulating, coordinating, and overseeing maritime affairs in Kenya in line with national priorities and international obligations.
The communication, issued as a press release dated April 16, 2026, was signed by Director General CPA Oumae Nyarandi, with the Authority providing official contact channels for further information.
