Equatorial Guinea Abolishes Death Penalty

According to state media, Equatorial Guinea has abolished the death penalty, thanks to a new crimes act signed by President Teodoro Obiang.

The country’s latest execution occurred eight years ago.

According to Reuters, Mr. Obiang’s son, Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, praised the decision as “historical and remarkable.”

According to Reuters, the new penal law will go into effect in 90 days.

Three years ago, President Obiang swore to eliminate the death penalty.

According to data provider Statista, capital punishment is still lawful in just over 30 African countries, although more than 20 of them have not carried out executions in at least 10 years.
