Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on Thursday, January 9, announced the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results at Mitihani House, Nairobi. A record 962,512 candidates sat for the national exams, which concluded on November 22, 2024, marking a 7.19% increase from 899,453 in 2023. This is the largest jump in candidature since 2020, according to KNEC CEO David Njegere.
CS Ogamba reported improved performance in 17 subjects, including Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, while 10 subjects, such as English and Home Science, saw declines. A total of 246,391 candidates scored C+ and above, earning direct university entry—a rise from 201,133 in 2023. However, results for 2,829 candidates were withheld due to alleged malpractices, and 91 teachers face disciplinary action over examination irregularities.
Njegere highlighted that new technological measures eliminated early exposure to exam papers, a persistent issue in previous years.
For the first time, the Ministry will offer a mid-year KCSE exam for candidates wishing to retake the test. “Following extensive consultations, KNEC will introduce a mid-year KCSE examination series starting this year,” Ogamba stated.
Notably, 2024 marked a historic gender milestone as female candidates outnumbered male candidates for the first time—482,202 girls compared to 480,310 boys. President William Ruto commended the increased school enrollment and completion rates among girls, attributing this to reforms in the education sector.
“This progress is reflected in improved performance and higher retention rates for girls across the country,” the President remarked.
The KCSE results underscore ongoing efforts to enhance Kenya’s education system and expand opportunities for all learners.
