NAIROBI, Kenya – The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has declared online activist Francis Ng’ang’a Gaitho a wanted individual over multiple cybercrime allegations and contempt of court.
In a statement issued today, the DCI accused Gaitho of publishing false information under Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act. He failed to appear in court on December 4, 2024, leading the Milimani Law Courts to issue a warrant for his arrest.
“This suspect not only violated the law by publishing false information but also demonstrated blatant disregard for judicial processes by absconding court,” the DCI stated.
The DCI further alleged that Gaitho shared private information about a senior public officer and spread false information targeting other Kenyan citizens. He is also accused of cyber harassment, including posts disparaging senior government officials.
The agency confirmed that the additional charges are under review by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further action.
Authorities have urged the public to assist in locating Gaitho, emphasizing the seriousness of his alleged offenses.
“If you have any information that may lead to the prompt arrest of the suspect, please call our toll-free hotline at 0800 722 203 anonymously or report to the nearest police station,” the DCI appealed.
The case highlights the increasing scrutiny of online activities and the enforcement of Kenya’s cybercrime laws. Gaitho’s actions have drawn attention to the legal and ethical implications of digital activism.
Investigations remain ongoing as the DCI works to bring the suspect to justice.
