Kisumu High Court has sentenced former Assistant Chief Joel Juma Oliewo to 30 years in prison after finding him guilty of murder. Oliewo, who previously served as the Assistant Chief of Upper Kadongo sub-location in Kisumu-West Sub County, was convicted for the killing of Eric Ochieng Atito on October 7, 2021, in Kadawa village.
Justice Roselyne Aburili delivered the verdict, emphasizing that the prosecution had presented compelling evidence proving Oliewo’s culpability beyond a reasonable doubt. The court had earlier placed Oliewo on his defense on August 19, 2024, after determining that he had a case to answer.
The trial, which commenced on November 14, 2023, saw 11 prosecution witnesses testify against the former administrator. The court reviewed all presented evidence before concluding that Oliewo was responsible for Atito’s death.
In her ruling, Justice Aburili noted that the severe sentencing would serve as a deterrent to others in positions of authority, discouraging them from taking the law into their own hands. The case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding justice, particularly in matters involving public officials entrusted with maintaining order in society.
Oliewo now faces a lengthy prison term for his crime, marking a significant conclusion to the high-profile case that has drawn public attention in Kisumu County.
