Cabinet’s Response to Turkana Blackouts: Shifts in Energy Priorities

Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has alluded to a significant shift in the allocation of electricity resources, hinting at a reevaluation that prioritizes regions such as Turkana. These areas, known for their substantial contributions to the national grid, will now be treated on par with urban centers.

During a recent Senate hearing, Turkana Senator James Lomenen expressed deep concerns regarding persistent blackouts in power generation hubs like Lodwar and Loima. He sought an explanation for why these areas, despite their energy production capacity, continue to endure unreliable power supply.

Senator Lomenen aptly described the situation as a paradox. He pointed out that the Turkwel Hydroelectric Power Station and Lake Turkana Wind Power are in close proximity, yet other parts of the country benefit from power sourced from here while they remain in darkness.

In response to these pressing concerns, CS Chirchir acknowledged that the root of the problem lies in one of the generators experiencing a malfunction. This malfunction has rendered it incapable of meeting the power demands of the region. The Cabinet Secretary assured the public that the government has initiated the process to secure a replacement generator. However, he lamented the prolonged and cumbersome tendering process, which has led to delays.

“We had initially anticipated the installation of the new generator before the commencement of Senate Mashinani. However, procedural hurdles have slowed down the process, and we must adhere to established rules,” explained the CS.

Additionally, the Energy Cabinet Secretary unveiled plans to address regions that are still unconnected to the national power grid. He also mentioned adjustments to appropriate voltages to facilitate power supply to underserved areas.

One significant focus area is the 220KV line in Loyangalani, Marsabit, and Isiolo, which he highlighted as pivotal points for imminent reticulation. The communities in these regions can look forward to enjoying the benefits of a reliable power supply in the near future.

It’s worth noting that CS Chirchir recently faced scrutiny when he was summoned by the Senate over the longest power blackout experienced in the country, which resulted in substantial losses for various businesses. These developments underscore the importance of addressing power supply issues comprehensively and efficiently.
